FIVE Secrets of Peter Hannaford:
Q1) How much time do you spend on social media everyday?
Not much. I confess that most of our Social Media (FB, Twitter, LinkedIn etc) is handled by our Marketing Team. I use LinkedIn occasionally to look up people who’s name has cropped up in conversation. Or who I think I’d like to be connected with. And of course I get quite a few invites myself on a daily basis. And, horror of horrors, I’m not on Facebook myself!
Q2) What keeps you up at night?
Oh, anything and everything. I’m not a great sleeper. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve slept all night over the last ten years. I go to sleep pretty quickly but will wake up after a few hours with some ideas or concerns. Then I’ll take a sneaky look at my phone to see what mails have come in. Inevitably I’ll have drifted off into a deep sleep by the time my alarm goes off.
Q3) What is the most frequently used app on your mobile phone?
It appears to be War Robots. But that’s not me! Every time I see my grandson he “borrows” my phone and dives in. For me it’s probably the app I developed myself which shows all the datacenter conferences and exhibitions scheduled for the year. And I use Uber and Lyft a lot when travelling.
Q4) 3 things to do in the morning to make your whole day more productive
First thing is to deal with all the mails & messages that I’ve received since I last checked them. I probably get over a hundred mails each day. But maybe a quarter are trying to sell me something I don’t need so I can delete these. And If I don’t deal with the rest they’ll get buried. Then I’ll update my to-do list and highlight things that I MUST get done that day. And I’m certainly less productive if I haven’t had breakfast. My essential meal of the day. Either at home, in the office or in a hotel or diner if I’m travelling. The gym should be on the list but seems to slipped off in the last month or two!
Q5) What is your most favourite quote?
“Better to try and fail than never to have tried at all”. From a poem by William F. O’Brien. Fortunately I don’t think I’ve experienced many failures in my life. I’d prefer to call them varying degrees of success!
Q6) Tell us one thing we didn’t know about you?
I’m a bit of a biker. Each year my friends and I (and sometimes our wives) head off somewhere for a couple of weeks with the minimum of luggage stuffed in our panniers. We’ve toured Ireland, done Route 66, ridden through the Atlas Mountains and across the Sahara desert. Last year was a scary trip in Peru through the Andes and down into the Amazon basin. This year we’re panning to travel the Natchez Trace Parkway and the Southern States of the USA. A little gentler!
